Looks like The Crow Reborn – the long suffering remake of the 1994 original – is taking flight once again, with Sony Pictures signing on to distribute the film worldwide. The story of The Crow finds a man returning from the grave to seek vengeance on the gang who murdered him and his girlfriend, all whilst being guided by a crow. A remake of the nineties cult classic has been mooted for years, with a revolving door of actors and directors being attached to the project.

Over the years Bradley Cooper, Mark Wahlberg, Channing Tatum and Luke Evans have been attached to the lead role, while filmmakers like Blade’s Stephen Norrington and Juan Carlos Fresnadillo have departed the director’s chair. It seemed as if the long gestating project was taking shape in 2016 when Jason Momoa signed on, but rights issues saw the film get postponed once again.

It looks like The Crow Reborn’s fortunes are finally changing, with The Tracking Board reporting that Sony Pictures have come onboard as distributors. There’s currently no word on a release date or whether Momoa is still attached to the lead, but as the actor is currently poised to make a big splash thanks to his role as Aquaman, Sony will likely want to keep him onboard. The actor was recently teasing a future project with The Crow’s current director Corin Hardy on Instagram too.

The Crow Reborn could launch another comic book franchise for Sony, who are currently riding high on the critical and commercial success of Spider-Man: Homecoming. This remake is said to be closer in tone to James O’Barr’s original graphic novel, which will likely land the movie an R rating. It appears the studio has been inspired by the success of Deadpool and Logan in this regard, as their forthcoming Tom Hardy Venom movie is also aiming for an R rating.

The original Crow kicked off a franchise, with three sequels of questionable quality and a short-lived television series. Sony Pictures will likely be eyeing the property as a potential franchise, and will no doubt launch sequels should it prove a success. It will also face a skeptical fanbase, who passionately feel the original movie should be left alone as a tribute to star Brandon Lee, who tragically died in an on-set accident during filming.
