The DCEU has begun to take shape. Man of Steel introduced us to Superman back in 2013, and Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice will see the early formation of the iconic Justice League. However, if there’s one film on the DC slate that has basically everyone excited, then it has to be the upcoming Batman solo movie. The Dark Knight has a long cinematic history marked by numerous different tragedies, so to set itself apart, The Batman (as it’s tentatively titled) will focus on one of Batman’s most tragic and beloved companions: Robin.

During an interview with EW, Geoff Johns explained that the upcoming Batman solo adventure would focus heavily on the tragedies of Batman’s past – specifically concerning what has happened to Robin prior to Batman V Superman:
We’ll be exploring that, no one says specifically the name of which Robin that is.
So while Robin may have died at some point during the course of Bruce Wayne’s career, no one has said anything about which Robin actually bit the dust. Most of us have assumed that the Robin suit in the Batcave belongs to Jason Todd; after all, he’s more or less the most iconic Robin to have died at some point in Batman’s career. All that being said, there’s precedent for other Robins to have suffered while under Batman’s tutelage. DC could take a page from the wildly popular animated movie Batman Beyond: Return of the Joker, and have Tim Drake be the one who the Clown Prince of Crime tortured and tormented.

Then again the suit could belong to Dick Grayson, or even Carrie Kelly. At this point we know so little about The Dark Knight’s upcoming adventure that really the door remains open for any of these guesses to be the truth.

Warner Bros. does need to tread lightly with how they approach a dead Robin storyline. Captain America: The Winter Soldier shared many narrative beats with the iconic Batman: A Death in the Family storyline, and as a result if DC opts to bring in a character like the Red Hood a.k.a Jason Todd, people will undoubtedly draw their own comparisons.

We will just have to wait and see how the upcoming Batman solo adventure handles the myriad tragedies that mark the history of the Caped Crusader. For now we still have to wait only a few more weeks until we finally see Batman and Superman throw down on the silver screen for the very first time in Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice, which will blast into theaters later this month on March 25.
