Heading into San Diego Comic-Con 2015, one of the main beliefs was that Warner Bros./DC needed to deliver something monumental to build some positive buzz for their blossoming shared movie universe. And by all accounts, that’s what happened, as both the Suicide Squad and Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice trailers that were played for the Hall H crowd seemed to go over very well.

The two previews were over three minutes in length and, though they’ve been officially released online, that’s longer than your typical theatrical trailer. They tend to run closer to two and a half minutes, which explains why WB has now released an IMAX version of the latest Batman V Superman trailer, which you can watch above.

The big takeaway here is that the trailer is simply a condensed version of the Comic-Con reel, which unfortunately means no new footage. The most notable difference is that several of the dialogue passages of either been shortened (Martha Kent’s monologue to Clark Kent) or removed entirely (Alfred’s line to Bruce Wayne about how Superman is not their enemy). It seems that the purpose of this particular trailer is to showcase the “IMAXiness” of Batman V Superman, putting the big spectacle set pieces front and center for us to see.

Though there still are some justifiable concerns about how all the story elements in Dawn of Justice will mesh together (Jesse Eisenberg’s Lex Luthor remains a wild card), there’s no denying that director Zack Snyder has crafted a film that should be seen on the largest of screens. The filmmaker has always had a good grasp on action sequences throughout his career, and he seems to have outdone himself with his latest superhero film. Several of the scenes here, like Superman and Batman’s fight and Wonder Woman using her bracelets of submission, look like they will be jaw-dropping on the silver screen, warranting the added price of a premium format like IMAX.

But ever since the beginning, nobody’s really been worried about Batman v Superman having a lack of superhero action. After Snyder’s own Man of Steel divided audiences in 2013 (and still inspires heated debate to this day), the question has been how Snyder will balance the style with substance. Luckily the IMAX trailer doesn’t skimp on that element, as it still presents a version of the titular characters’ contrasting ideologies and why they see each other as a threat. Regardless of which iteration of the recent trailer you watch, it suggests that there will be strong thematic material that will make the individuals (and not just their costumed alter egos) fascinating to watch on-screen.

Yes, some may roll their eyes at Eisenberg’s hammy delivery of lines like “the red capes are coming” and wonder what the purpose of Batman in the desert is, but there’s still a lot about the film we don’t know yet (even the official synopsis was brief). In the meantime, we’ll have to make do with praise from the likes of Ben Affleck and Eisenberg, who are risking a lot career wise by appearing in the film. If these Oscar-worthy talents believe that Batman v Superman is going to be something special, we don’t have a reason to doubt them yet. And this trailer, even with its faults, paints a picture that many of us cannot wait to see.
