Working Title is behind the new adaptation of Daphne du Maurier’s gothic classic.

Netflix and Working Title are teaming on a new adaptation of one of old Hollywood's most beloved mysteries: Rebecca.

Armie Hammer and Lily James are set to star as the newly married couple at the center of the gothic thriller that is based on Daphne du Maurier’s classic.

The 1938 novel tells the story of a young woman who, on arriving at her husband's imposing family estate on a bleak English coast, finds herself battling the shadow of his dead first wife, the mysterious Rebecca, whose legacy continues to haunt the house.

English director Ben Wheatley, who worked with Hammer on shoot-'em-up action comedy Free Fire, will direct from a screenplay by Kingsman writer Jane Goldman. Working Title’s Eric Fellner will produce, along with Tim Bevan and Nira Park.

In 1940, Alfred Hitchcock directed the preeminent adaptation of Rebecca, which was produced by David O. Selznick and stars Lawrence Oliver and Joan Fontaine. At the time, The Hollywood Reporter's review called the movie "overlong" but went on to say it is an "artistic masterpiece." Rebecca would go on to earn Oscar nominations in nearly every major category and eventually took home the 1941 best picture statue.

Hammer, who is repped by WME and Sloane Offer, will next be seen in Ruth Bader Ginsburg biopic On the Basis of Sex, out Dec. 25, and Hotel Mumbai.

James was last seen in the Mamma Mia! sequel, Here We Go Again, which earned nearly $400 million at the global box office. Repped by UTA and the U.K's Tavistock Wood, the English actress will next be seen in Richard Curtis and Danny Boyle's musical comedy set up at Universal.

Wheatley is repped by WME, the U.K.'s Independent and Bloom Hergott; Goldman is repped by WME and the U.K.'s Independent.
