Aquaman Will Not Feature Justice League Team Cameos - Here’s Why
There won't be any other Justice League team member cameos in Aquaman. After trying to build a tightly connected cinematic universe, Warner Bros. and DC are slightly shifting their strategy. The new vision will focus on individual characters and their franchises. While these movies will still exist in the same universe, the level of crossover may not be as high as some audiences would expect. The first example of this will come at the end of the year when Jason Momoa's Aquaman returns.
Momoa first appeared as Aquaman briefly in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, but finally got some real screen time in Justice League. Even though he now knows at least six other superheroes, they won't be part of his everyday life. For that reason and more, Aquaman won't be featuring any other League members.
Director James Wan confirmed this during an interview with EW. Momoa's solo movie will be truly a standalone adventure, as no other members of the super team are set to make an appearance. According to Wan, he made this decision to keep the focus on Arthur Curry's journey but also so he didn't have to worry about the larger continuity.
I wanted to keep the story to the world of Aquaman and not have to worry about what other characters are doing in their films and how that would affect us. I just thought the simplest way was to keep it clean — keep it simple and let it be an Aquaman story.
This shouldn't come as too big of a surprise, as Wan has consistently made an effort to note how Aquaman is its own story. The possibility of making the film too connected was one of the reasons behind the brief rumors that Wan could leave the project. Thankfully, Wan didn't leave the film and he says WB respected this request and his vision. However, this means that viewers shouldn't expect to see Gal Gadot's Wonder Woman or any other hero make an appearance.
Allowing Aquaman to happen without being bogged down by a larger continuity should help the movie feel as standalone as possible. If this strategy works for Aquaman, then the future DC films will likely follow suit. Wonder Woman 1984 isn't expected to have any other Justice League members appear either, while a Superman cameo in Shazam! has been rumored, but not yet confirmed. The lack of appearances don't count out other smaller tie-ins though, such as name drops in the vein of Shazam!'s several Easter eggs. Whether or not Aquaman features anything like that remains to be seen, but we now officially know not to expect Aquaman to unite any of his Justice League team members.
