Aquaman Begins Filming in Australia This Week

Filming is getting underway on director James Wan’s DC Extended Universe movie this week (starting with May 1st), Aquaman. The project stars Game of Thrones alum Jason Momoa as the titular superhero and has fans buzzing, as Momoa was hailed for his gravitas as Khal Drogo in the hit HBO TV series’ first season; to mention nothing of his acclaimed work on such TV series as The Red Road and Stargate: Atlantis, on top of that.

To everyone’s delight, it looks like production for the Aquaman solo film is not only on-track, but possibly a bit ahead of schedule. It was previously reported that Aquaman would start filming about three weeks into this month, but a fresh report on the subject reveals that production on the project is getting underway now, instead.

Aquaman will begin filming in Australia this week, according to a report from Brisbane news outlet The Courier-Mail. The article, which makes a case for better tax breaks for Hollywood studios filming in Australia, cites the upcoming DCEU project as a positive. As Gold Coast, Queensland seeks to become the site of Australia’s “Hollywood,” Aquaman contributes to the city’s burgeoning film economy. The piece points out:

“The filming of blockbuster Aquaman, starting this week at Village Roadshow Studios, will create more than 600 jobs and inject more than $100 million into the local economy as the city further cements its reputation as a filming destination.”
Several other high-profile projects have recently filmed in Australia, including upcoming Marvel project Thor: Ragnarok, the latest Pirates of the Caribbean film, and box office hit Kong: Skull Island. Village Roadshow Studios, the Australian production arm of Village Roadshow Pictures, has a hand in Thor, Pirates, and Aquaman. Though the production company also helped with blockbusters like San Andreas and The Shallows, it looks like they’re about to really ramp up their business with these three upcoming films.

It’s fantastic to hear that filming for Aquaman will soon be under way. Not only does that mean the DCEU project is going swimmingly (sorry, had to be done), it also has us excited for upcoming cast social media posts and official photos from the set. This will be an interesting directorial turn for Wan after his horror film work (not to mention, his first big-budget venture, Furious 7), and this grittier look at the king of the sea is sure to produce fascinating results.

    Just saw this.

Awesome. It'll be exciting to see how he is in the Justice League film.
