Anthony Mackie Cast in Netflix’s Action Thriller The Ogun

Anthony Mackie will star in and produce The Ogun, an action-thriller film for Netflix. Mackie rose to global fame with his portrayal of Sam Wilson/ Falcon in several MCU movies, including Captain America: The Winter Soldier, Avengers: Age of Ultron, Ant-Man, Captain America: Civil War, Avengers: Infinity War, and Avengers: Endgame. He also later went on to star as Takeshi Kovacs in the second season of Netflix's cyberpunk TV-series Altered Carbon before landing a role in Justin Benson and Aaron Moorehead's critically acclaimed Synchronic movie. Mackie recently wrapped up filming for the Disney+ limited series The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, in which he reprises his role as the high-flying Falcon. And now he is headed back to Netflix to produce and lead his own film.

As confirmed by The Hollywood Reporter on Tuesday, Anthony Mackie will soon act in and produce an action-thriller movie called The Ogun off a script by The Dark Knight Rises scribe Madison Turner for Netflix. In the movie, Mackie stars as a man called Xavier Rhodes, who travels to Nigeria with his teenage daughter in order to seek a cure for a rare genetic illness that she has inherited from him. But while they are in the African country, Rhodes' daughter is kidnapped leading him to violently run amok through the criminal underworld. Rhodes must rescue his daughter before it's too late, and in his mission, he must employ his powerful abilities to their very limit. Currently, there is no director attached to the film, but Mandalay Pictures' Jason Michael Berman has been confirmed to produce alongside Mackie.

Berman and Mackie's association with Netflix dates back to 2019 when they co-produced the post-apocalyptic sci-fi film IO for the streamer. But the previous collaboration did not necessarily fare well in terms of critical response. Mackie obviously has a lot of star power, which he had acquired during his time in the MCU. And the John Wick meets Dante's Inferno premise of The Ogun also sounds fairly appealing. But for the film to deliver its promise, it will have to work beyond its pure intentions and convey its idea effectively and convincingly.
