Ant-Man 2 Director Wants Wasp to Lead an All-Female Avengers Movie
Peyton Reed believes Wasp should be lead an all-female Avengers movie. Marvel Studios is finally assembling more super powered females to be prominent figures in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Scarlett Johansson's Black Widow has always been a fan-favorite, but heroes like Gamora and Scarlet Witch have risen as well. There are also newcomers like Valkyrie and Captain Marvel, but it was Evangeline Lilly's Wasp who received top-billing thanks to Ant-Man and the Wasp.
The sequel was just as much her movie as it was Ant-Man's, and finally paid off the post-credits tease from Ant-Man about her suiting up. Now that fans have had a taste of her in action, they only want more. Lilly isn't interested in a Wasp solo movie right now, but she is ready for an all-female team-up - and her director thinks she should lead.
Huffington Post asked Ant-Man and the Wasp director Peyton Reed about Wasp's potential role in such a film. The question comes after Lilly said Captain Marvel should be the leader of the team, but Reed believes Wasp "checks a lot of boxes" when it comes to what you want out of a leader, making Wasp an ideal choice to lead.
"I’d like her running things. I’d like to see her as the head of the all-female Avengers. I know Evangeline sort of said ... maybe that would be Captain Marvel, because she does have the word 'captain' in her name. But I think Hope van Dyne is a very decisive leader and a tactician, in addition to being a brilliant scientist. So she checks a lot of boxes in terms of who’s going to be running the Avengers, theoretically."
Reed makes a compelling case for Wasp to be the leader of this hypothetical team. He may have special interest in Wasp taking the leadership role due to how he's crafted the character so far, but she does fit the criteria. Unlike her crime fighting partner Scott Lang, Hope van Dyne has been training to be a hero for years - and it shows. If Marvel does actually move forward with such a film, then fans would finally have an answer on who would lead.
That said, the idea of an all-female movie came straight from the actresses playing these parts - Lilly included - so who's to say there's just one leader? Even the current Avengers rest on the shoulders of different heroes, depending on what they've been called to do. Iron Man funds the team while Captain America calls most of the shots. The fight for power may not exist between the female heroes, letting several take command. If that were to be the case, then all parties can be happy as Captain Marvel, Wasp, and others could each get their shot. But, if a singular voice is required, Reed makes a good argument for Wasp to take that role. Now we'll just have to wait and see if Marvel Studios actually makes this all-female Avengers or not.
