The Angry Birds Movie grossed $43 million this weekend in territories across Europe, the Middle East, Africa, and South America.

The figure set a record May opening for an original animated film, hitting number 1 in the charts in 37 markets, according to Rovio.

A few of the top territories included Russia ($5.7M), the UK ($3.0M), Germany ($2.9M), and Mexico ($2.9M).

"Strong critical reception and great word of mouth ignited the box office on Saturday as The Angry Birds Movie displayed huge increases from Friday, suggesting a long and, dare we say it, happy run for the film," said Rovio on the company's website.

The video game film will release in top markets like the United States, China, and South Korea on May 20.
