A year ago, AMC announced that a television adaptation of the 1990s Vertigo comic Preacher was in the works from Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg (Superbad, The Interview), as well as Sam Catlin (Breaking Bad). Talking about the adaptation, Rogen has said they’re trying to “expand some of the ideas” from the original comic written by Garth Ennis with art by Steve Dillon, and that the TV series will diverge from the source material.

More recently, AMC ordered a pilot for Preacher, which will follow Reverend Jesse Custer, an alcoholic vampire, and Jesse’s ex-girlfriend. A rumor about who AMC may be seeking for the lead role as Jesse now points toward an actor just off another comic book role.

According to Tracking Board, the network’s top pick to star as Jesse Custer is Dominic Cooper (Agent Carter), though no official offers have been made. The pilot of Preacher will be directed by Rogen and Goldberg, while Catlin will write the script and act as the series’ showrunner. An official synopsis for AMC’s Preacher has also been released.

Read the full synopsis:

“ ‘Preacher’ follows Reverend Jesse Custer, a tough Texas preacher who has lost his faith, and has learned that God has left Heaven and abandoned his responsibilities. He finds himself the only person capable of tracking God down, demanding answers, and making him answer for his dereliction of duty. Accompanying Jesse on his journey is his former girlfriend and a friendly vampire who seems to prefer a pint in the pub to the blood of the innocent. On his tail is one of the most iconic bad guys in print – an immortal, unstoppable killing machine named the Saint of Killers —a western lone gunman archetype whose sole purpose is to hunt and kill Jesse.”

Cooper is no stranger to playing characters adapted from comics – he has now played a young version of Howard Stark in both Captain America: The First Avenger and Agent Carter. Additionally, the actor has held roles in supernatural films such as Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter and Dracula Untold, as well as an upcoming role in the fantasy/adventure adaptation Warcraft.

Although Cooper has experience both with adapting characters originally created for comics and portraying roles within supernatural worlds, inevitably the actor may not be some fans’ first choice for Jesse Custer. Whether Cooper doesn’t quite fit the look of the Preacher role or he isn’t quite as gritty as fans were expecting, some may be disappointed by this potential casting.

Of course, Cooper has not yet been cast as the star in Preacher, so this rumor should be taken with a grain of salt. However, the choice of Cooper does offer some insight into what the network may be looking for: a recognizable actor who can capture the Texan attitude of Jesse Custer. Whether that does end up being Cooper remains to be seen.

Preacher will begin production this year and is expected to premiere on AMC in 2016.
