Amazon's Upload TV Show Renewed For Season 2 Just One Week After Release

Amazon has renewed the science fiction comedy Upload for season 2, just one week after its release. Created by Greg Daniels, who is known for co-creating Parks and Recreation and developing the American version of The Office, his latest show takes place in a near future where individuals can be uploaded into a virtual afterlife of their choice. The first season, consisting of 10 episodes, starred Robbie Amell, Andy Allo, Allegra Edwards, Zainab Johnson, and Kevin Bigley. Andrea Rosen, Jessica Tuck, and William B. Davis are among the names that round out the cast of the Amazon series.

Upload focuses on Nathan Brown (Amell), an app developer who finds himself in the hospital following a self-driving car accident. Having to quickly decide his fate, with not much time for careful consideration, he decides to be uploaded to the luxurious virtual afterlife known as Lakeview. Adjusting to digital heaven, and still having to deal with his girlfriend Ingrid (Edwards), the recently deceased app developer finds himself bonding with Nora (Allo), who is Nathan’s handler in the afterlife. Working in customer service, Nora has her own struggles. She has to deal with her dying father, who has no desire to be uploaded once he passes, in addition to her uncertainty about whether Nathan was intentionally murdered.

The series set up a lot in its first season, deepening the depiction of characters that were initially presented as shallow, like Ingrid. It also tackled heavy themes that centered around technology, capitalism, and humanity itself. For those who were impressed with the latest project from Daniels, and for those eager to find out what happens next, they’ll be happy to learn that Amazon has decided to renew Upload just one week after it was released. Jennifer Salke, as the head of Amazon Studios, elaborated on the quick renewal decision by noting the devoted audience that wants to see the next chapter of Upload.

The sci-fi comedy has drawn comparisons to The Good Place and the standout Black Mirror episode “San Junipero,” which also featured a character that struggled with the idea of continuing to live virtually. Critically, Upload has received generally positive reviews. Screen Rant’s review of Upload season 1 found that the humor was familiar, but fun nonetheless.

With this early renewal, fans of Upload don't need to worry about the series being a one season wonder. There’s also the possibility that the series will continue to improve, returning with a sophomore outing that is more assured and focused. Given the track record of Daniels, who also co-created the animated comedy King of the Hill, there’s a chance that Upload will grow into a truly great satire.
