Following reports last week that Kurt Russell was being eyed to play Peter Quill's father in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2., the Hateful Eight star has confirmed he's currently in negotations with Marvel for the role.

"I literally got a phone call two days ago about this," Russell said on the Wolfpop podcast (via Comic Book Movie), admitting he never saw the the first film and was unaware James Gunn wrote and directed it.

Russell said that he and Gunn discussed the role over the phone. After thanking the director for considering him for the part, he told Gunn he would like to read the script and see the first film before making a decision. "I’ve got nothing to offer here," he said. "So, I’m amazed to get asked about this because everybody knows more about it than I do... it’s a little weird."

The actor also spoke with The Wall Street Journal about the role, confirming he is currently in talks with Marvel for the part. "It could be a one line thing for all I know," he said, jokingly. "But yeah, we’re talking about it... there’s just nothing to talk about at the moment."

Guardians of the Galaxy opens on May 5, 2017.
