Agents of SHIELD Premieres to 11.9 Million Viewers, Season Preview Video

Turns out, 11.9 million viewers is good, but not great. Or at least, not great enough to be #1 last night, when Marvel took another shot at primetime TV after being MIA for a very, very long time. I guess they were too busy conquering the movies.

The Joss Whedon-helmed “Agents of SHIELD” opened on ABC with 11.9 million viewers tuning in, which was good, but not nearly good enough to dethrone CBS’ aging “NCIS”, which boasted 19.5 million viewers on the same night. I’m not what you would call a TV numbers guy, but almost 20 million to watch a dinosaur like “NCIS” is pretty astounding. Then again, NBC’s “The Voice”, the 509th singing competition on TV at the moment, also drew 12.7 million viewers.

Good God. Who is controlling those Nielsen boxes out there? Very, very old people who don’t like change and very, very young people who will watch any shitty singing competition?

In any case, “Agents of SHIELD’s” 11.9 million viewers isn’t bad, but of course as if with most shows, it’s about how it CONTINUES to do that will matter, now how it opens. I’ve seen shows open with gangbuster numbers, only to be canceled a year later. The trick is always to KEEP all those viewers.
