Marvel’s new series Agent Carter is hitting TV screens in the new year with a two-hour premiere that will kick off the chronicles of S.H.I.E.L.D.’s early days and the life of Agent Peggy Carter as she picks up the pieces in the wake of Steve Rogers’ “death.” Starring Hayley Atwell in the title role and also featuring the return of Dominic Cooper as Howard Stark, the first season will focus on Peggy’s attempt to recover a missing batch of weapons.

Of course, doing field work for Howard Stark isn’t even Peggy’s main job – it’s a top secret endeavor that she has to keep secret from the top secret intelligence agency that she works for, which she keeps secret from her friends with a cover story about working for the phone company. With all that secrecy, it’s little wonder that Peggy doesn’t have much time left for a love life.

In a new clip from the premiere of Agent Carter, Peggy gets ready to go out at the same time as Colleen (Ashley Hinshaw), her roommate, comes in from work at a factory. In the wake of the Second World War, Colleen finds her job at risk as men come home from the war, and Peggy finds herself becoming equally marginalized and forced to do paperwork instead of field work for the Strategic Scientific Reserve.

In addition to the new clip, Marvel has also released a new poster for Agent Carter that shows Atwell ready for action in her oh-so stylish red hat.

Agent Carter also stars Bridget Regan as Peggy’s neighbor, Dottie, and Lyndsy Fonseca as her friend Angie Martinelli, an aspiring actress. The other side of Peggy’s life includes James D’Arcy as Howard Stark’s butler Jarvis, Shea Whigham as SSR chief Roger Dooley, and Costa Ronin as Anton Vanko, father of Iron Man 2 villain Ivan Vanko.

Reaper creators Tara Butters and Michele Fazekas are acting as showrunners on Agent Carter, which will have a relatively short first season of just seven episodes (including the two-hour premiere). The show seems to have a slightly more pulp detective tone rather than focusing on the sci-fi elements that permeate the Marvel universe, but things could easily take a turn for the weird along the way.

Agent Carter premieres on January 6th, 2015 at 8/7c on ABC.
