‘Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.’ Midseason Return Trailer: Skye & Raina Become Inhuman

It’s been a long road for Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. After premiering in 2013 to record numbers, the ABC series seemingly lost its way during the first season. But then Captain America: The Winter Soldier released in theaters, providing just the right catalyst for a bigger story, and the rest, as they say, is history.

One year later, when season 2 returns next month, everything will change all over again. When we last left Coulson and his team before the midseason break, Skye was finally revealed to be the Marvel Comics character Daisy Johnson a.k.a. Quake. And yet, perhaps even more importantly, this major development introduced the Inhumans storyline to the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

And a brand new trailer from IGN doesn’t waste any time asking the central question from the midseason premiere: “What have they become?”

While it’s no secret that both Skye and Raina were left transformed by the terrigenesis process, which occurred in the winter finale, it still remains to be seen how this will affect their characters in the long run. For what it’s worth, Skye seems to be having some serious problems dealing with her newfound powers, while Raina appears to have turned into a monster.

Thankfully for Skye, help is already on the way. Luke Mitchell is set to join the cast as Lincoln, an Inhuman who will help Skye learn more about her origins and control her abilities. According to Marvel, he’s essential to “understanding the true extent of her transformation.” Also joining the cast to cause even more drama is Blair Underwood as Melinda May’s ex-husband and Edward James Olmos as Robert Gonzales, whose presence will have a major impact on the S.H.I.E.L.D. team.

Of course, this new storyline has an even larger purpose, which is preparing audiences for the Inhumans movie coming in November 2018. That said, it’s unlikely that the Inhuman storyline will stay contained to Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. for very long. With the TV series already having rumored connections to this summer’s The Avengers: Age of Ultron, we’re sure the Inhumans will show up a lot over the next few years.

But what do you think, Screen Rant readers? Are you excited for Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. to return and to learn more about the Inhumans? Let us know in the comments.

Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. returns Tuesday, March 3rd @9pm on ABC.
