Marvel's 'Captain Phasma' comic reveals what happened to Gwendoline Christie after fans last saw her.

Star Wars: The Last Jedi is still months away from release, but fans eager to get a jump on the follow-up to 2015's The Force Awakens should head to the comic store right now. The first issue of Marvel's Star Wars: Captain Phasma comic book doesn't just show what happened to Gwendoline Christie's character after she was captured by Finn and Han, it also features the first canonical appearance of a new character who's already a fan-favorite.

Written by Kelly Thompson with art by Marco Checchetto, Captain Phasma actually begins before the end of The Force Awakens, and shows what happened after Phasma was dumped down a trash compactor after her codes were used by the Resistance — spoiler: anyone who thought that she'd suffer the same kind of trash compactor fate as Han, Luke and Leia in the original Star Wars movie will be disappointed; First Order training enables a far speedier escape — while also addressing another dangling plot thread: would Phasma be punished for her codes being used to destroy Starkiller Base?

The answer turns out to be far more complicated than a simple "yes" or "no," turning into a plot line that demonstrates both Phasma's ruthlessness and also her resourcefulness. As she commanders a TIE Fighter to escape Starkiller Base, however, there's a surprise cameo from an already-familiar face.

No, not that cameo. This one:

Yes, that's BB-9E, who's already won over hearts as a toy, showing up for the first time in-universe. Does this mean that BB-9E will be Phasma's personal droid in The Last Jedi? Time — and the remaining three issues of the comic series — will tell. For those looking to whet their whistle in advance of Rian Johnson's next installment, consider this the perfect taster for what's to come.

Star Wars: Captain Phasma No. 1 is available in comic book stores and digitally now.
