Here are nine shows that finished last season on a high note. You can still make up for lost time:

"Boardwalk Empire"

Season 5 of HBO's award-winning series premieres on Sunday, Sept. 7 with Nucky Thompson (Steve Buscemi) trying to keep his stranglehold on 1920s New Jersey. The show has made some mistakes along the way, but it still manages to introduce compelling new characters like Brian Geraghty's Agent Warren Knox and Patricia Arquette's Sally Wheet last season, while keeping us hooked on dangerous gangsters like Al Capone (Stephen Graham) and Lucky Luciano (Vincent Piazza). You can catch most of the series on Amazon Prime and iTunes. A subscription to HBO Go gets you every episode.

"Sons of Anarchy"

This is it for the best biker show to ever hit TV. The seventh season of "Sons of Anarchy" will be the show's last. The final episodes of last season proved that no character is safe. So expect fireworks when Jax Teller and the gang return on Tuesday, Sept. 9 on FX. Amazon has the entire series, while Season 6 comes to Netflix in October.

"New Girl"

It will be interesting to see where "New Girl" goes during Season 4, which premieres on Sept. 16. The show's creators have already admitted that things got a little too emo between Nick and Jess last season. Here's hoping we get back to the fun loving group comedy that made the show so addictive in the first place. You can watch all the episodes over at Amazon.com.

"The Mindy Project"

Fox's "The Mindy Project," whose third season premieres right after "New Girl" on Sept. 16, has gone from a show that might get cancelled to one of the best comedies on television. A lot of that lies in the lovable supporting characters, but also the show's ability to keep teasing the on again, off again relationship between Mindy Kaling's title character and Chris Messina's Danny Castellano. You can watch the first two seasons on Amazon.com and Hulu Plus.

"The Good Wife"

We will see if "The Good Wife" can recover from its controversial decision to kill off one of its most popular characters last season (see below). The show's sixth season premieres on Sunday, Sept. 21. "The Good Wife" still has its best weapon in actress Julianna Margulies, who gives one of the best performances you will see on television. See her work over at Amazon.com.

"Sleepy Hollow"

Fox's surprise hit "Sleepy Hollow" was one of the few bright spots when it came to new series last season. The show's nice mix of supernatural mythology and police drama helped maintain a steady fan base week to week. We'll see if fans stick around when Season 2 arrives Monday, Sept. 22. You can watch the first season of "Sleepy Hollow" over at Amazon.com.

"Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D."

"Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D." is the rare kind of show that has a movie tied in with it. The show lives in the Marvel Universe, with a plot that is affected by what happens in the popular movies. The first season finale set things up nicely for Season 2 as Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson) tasked Agent Coulson (Clark Gregg) with rebuilding S.H.I.E.L.D. after the events of "Captain America: The Winter Soldier." Season 2 premieres on Sept. 23 on ABC. The first season is available for purchase at Amazon.com.

"Scandal"

"Scandal" is one of the wildest, most unpredictable shows on television. It's also one of the most addictive. Last season saw bomb threats, murder, kidnapping, political corruption and a presidential election. And that was just the finale episode. Season 4 probably won't waste anytime getting into the drama when it premieres on Sept. 25. You can watch most of the episodes on Netflix and purchase the rest at Amazon.com.

"Once Upon a Time"

The spinoff series "Once Upon a Time in Wonderland" may have failed miserably, but the original, "Once Upon a Time," is still going strong. The show doesn't take itself too seriously, which is what makes it so fun. Season 4 premieres on Sunday, Sept. 28 and promises to introduce Elsa and other characters from Disney's popular 2013 film "Frozen." You can catch up on the series with a full run of episodes over at Amazon.com.
