'This Is Us' takes home best new show, while 'Atlanta' and its star Donald Glover also score key victories.


Coming into the 33rd annual Television Critics Association Awards with a leading four victories, Hulu's The Handmaid's Tale scored two key victories including program of the year at Saturday's ceremony.
The streamer, which scored its first-ever nominations this year, also saw its breakout dystopian tale score a win for best drama. NBC's This Is Us was recognized as best new program. FX's Atlanta took home the trophy for best comedy and star Donald Glover was the winner for achievement in comedy.
The non-televised event, hosted by American Gods' Kristin Chenoweth, was held at the Beverly Hilton in Beverly Hills, home of the three-week TCA summer press tour that is currently underway.
Carrie Coon also made TCA history by being recognized for two separate roles (HBO's The Leftovers and FX's Fargo). Ken Burns was honored with the career achievement award and NBC's Seinfeld was recognized with the career achievement award.
The awards were voted on by television critics across the country. where the career achievement and Heritage award winners will also be announced.
"This was one of the most diverse seasons in recent memory, offering a wide range of programming that truly had a little something for everyone,” outgoing TCA president (and THR contributor) Amber Dowling said. “It also treated us to some incredible performances and eclectic plotlines that challenged us, moved us, and thrilled us, reinvigorating the television landscape with bold and innovative subjects that we had rarely seen before.”
