13 Reasons Why has been renewed for season 3, Netflix has confirmed. The announcement was made via a short video clip of a Liberty High school locker with the number 3 sprayed on the front. The renewal comes as little surprise; 13 Reasons Why instantly became one of Netflix's most popular shows upon its release in 2017, and though its second season received mixed reviews, the 13 Reasons Why fanbase is still very much embracing the controversial show.

In keeping with the timescale for seasons 1 and 2, 13 Reasons Why season 3 will begin filming later this year, to premiere on Netflix in 2019. Brian Yorkey will remain as showrunner, and Selena Gomez also returns as executive producer of the show. Again, in line with seasons 1 and 2, and in keeping with the title, 13 Reasons Why season 3 will be 13 episodes long. There are no details regarding any possible storyline, but season 2 left a number of cliffhangers that need to be resolved. The last time we saw Clay Jensen (Dylan Minnette), he was holding an assault rifle on school property as the police responded to calls of an active shooter. The real shooter, Tyler Down (Devin Druid), had made his getaway with Tony (Christian Navarro).

For Clay, a lot of season 2 focused on getting closure after Hannah Baker's suicide. We finally saw this happen, and the ghost of Hannah leaving his life; actress Katherine Langford has since confirmed that she will not be returning to 13 Reasons Why. That leaves room for 13 Reasons Why to focus on other storylines, such as Tyler's (hopeful) rehabilitation, and what will happen to Chloe now that she's pregnant with Bryce's baby. Though she knows him to be a rapist, and she's been raped by him herself, she decided to stand by him because she already knew of her pregnancy. Will she find the courage to go it alone?

Season 3 will also, hopefully, give other new characters from season 2 a chance to shine in a way they couldn't with Hannah's story hanging over everything. Bryce Cass, as Cyrus, gave a strong performance as the troublemaker who befriended Tyler, and it would be good to see more of him, especially as other characters, such as Zach Dempsey (Ross Butler), Marcus Cole (Steven Silver) and others are supposed to be going to college.

13 Reasons Why has gained a reputation as courting controversy, with a graphic suicide shown in season 1, plus two brutal rape scenes, and an extremely graphic and upsetting sexual assault shown at the end of season 2 before a school shooting almost took place. No doubt 13 Reasons Why season 3 will follow on, though how much more the students of Liberty High can tolerate remains to be seen.

13 Reasons Why seasons 1 and 2 are streaming now on Netflix. Season 3 will arrive in 2019.
