After more than a year of buzz and waiting, Chris Pratt and Jennifer Lawrence’s new sci-fi film Passengers premieres in a little under three months. The script, written by Jon Spaihts (Prometheus, Doctor Strange), has been around a lot longer and was even included in 2007’s Black List (a list of Hollywood’s most admired scripts that have yet to be greenlit). At one point, Keanu Reeves and Reese Witherspoon were even attached to star, before the film eventually moved over to Sony under director Morten Tyldum (who received a best directing Oscar nomination for The Imitation Game).

For the longest time, there was very little publicity for Passengers. But with the latest release of a poster and trailer in the past few weeks, it seems Sony’s promotion of the film has begun aiming for the 2016-2017 awards season. Set on a spaceship that malfunctions 30 years into its 120-year voyage, Passengers has a lot going for it. Pratt and Lawrence are bonafide stars, and the premise of the film is sure to wow viewers with its visuals, while also thrilling them with the romance and life-and-death struggle of the leads. Like Alfonso Cuarón’s Gravity, they’ll need to figure out how to survive against impossible odds.

The recently released trailer mostly focused on the duo’s journey and the problems they’ll face along the way, but now newly released stills features the film’s two stars. Pratt plays Jim Preston, a mechanical engineer from Denver who wants to leave Earth and bought a ticket on Starship Avalon for the distant colony planet known as Homestead II. Lawrence is Aurora Dunn, a writer from New York who is interested in cosmic travel. Check out the new stills below (via: CBM):

A lot of fuss has been made about a big twist in the Passengers story. Even the recent trailer teased this little wrinkle that will tear the leads apart while they struggle to survive. However, the new stills seem to have been taken during happier times, while the two are still investigating the spaceship and deciding what to do about their rapidly developing situation. The spaceship is equipped with every luxury they could ever want for their journey. Yet with 90 years to go until they reach Homestead II, they’ll unfortunately both end up living and dying before they reach their destination.

To make matters worse, something more than just the two’s malfunctioning sleeping pods is wrong with the the spaceship. There’s a more immediate danger, as glimpsed in the trailer when Starship Avalon skirts past a red hot sun. With the lives of 5000 other still sleeping passengers at stake, they’ll need to figure out how to save the ship before even considering how to save themselves.

Passengers opens in theaters December 21, 2016.
