What does hit'n'run mean?
When someone downloads a torrent but does not
seed it back in turn, it's called a hit'n'run. Upload
ratio expectations and the time available to fulfil them are detailed under the
seed requirements section.
Why do we need this new system?
The traditional
ratio system had been distorted for many reasons (including the steady increase of internet bandwidth, upload multipliers, free torrents,
freeleech periods and built-in buffers), so keeping a good
ratio had not been encouraging enough to keep users in
seed. However, without multipliers and the occasional free grabs, keeping up with the minimum
ratio would be difficult for low-bandwidth users, and increasing the minimum
ratio requisite would not make a significant difference, either.
This new system values truly active users and increases torrent lifetime by cutting back on hit'n'runs.
What are the
seed requirements?
If you download more than 5% OR more than 200
MB of any torrent (whichever you reach first),
seed requirements apply. You have two ways to complete these obligations:
-
Seed back the content (1.0
ratio)
- Stay in
seed for a duration (at least 48 hours, depending on the size of the content)
The amount to upload back equals the amount of content you downloaded from the torrent. So the goal is to reach a 1.0
ratio on each of your torrents.
The minimum
seed time on
seed-required torrents is 48 hours, plus an additional 0.4 hours (24 minutes) per
GB of downloaded content (e.g.
seed time on a 10
GB film is 48 hours + 10 * 0.4 hours = 52 hours). Your
ratio on the torrent will also shorten your
seed time dynamically (e.g. uploading half of the content will shorten
seed time by half).

Time left = (1 -
ratio) * (48 + 0.4 * downloaded amount) -
seed duration
-
ratio = upload/download
ratio of the torrent
- downloaded amount = amount of content downloaded from the torrent
-
seed duration = time spent seeding the torrent
You can complete these requirements either in one go or with small breaks, it's your choice. The system will only check the status of your requirements at the end of the month. This means the time you have to fulfil the
seed requirement on a torrent is somewhere between 2 weeks and 6 weeks. Only at the end of a month will the system check if your torrents were properly shared back or not (e.g. number of seeded torrents, hit'n'runs). At the end of each month, torrents older than 14 days will be removed from your Activity tab.

Furthermore, you are allowed to ignore the
seed requirements on an allotted number of torrents, depending on your current user class.
You can keep track of your
seed requirements, your successfully seeded torrents and your hit'n'runs under the Activity menu.
Ranking
User activity is measured by rankings. Do not forget that this is a ladder, so it's value depends on other users' activity as well.
Activity measurement has many factors, you can read about these here.
Important! Ranking is a positive encouragement only (point system), nobody is sanctioned because of it, not even the very last user.
Ranking types:
Daily rank: Activity each day from 00:01 to 24:00.
Weekly rank: Activity from Monday, 00:01 to Sunday, 24:00.
Monthly rank: Activity from first day of the month, 00:01 to last day of the month, 24:00.
This means that ranking measurements are reset at 00:00, every day for daily ranks, every Monday for weekly ranks, and on the first day of the month for monthly rankings.
Some minutes may pass between the distribution of daily, weekly and monthly ranks. As a result, there may be some discrepancy between the daily and weekly ranks on Monday, or the daily and monthly ranks on the first day of the month.
The infobar shows your current monthly ranking (after your user name, points and upload amount).
Activity menu
You can access your activity menu here. It shows your
seed required torrents, finished seeds for 2 weeks after download, your current daily, weekly and monthly ranks, and the number of finished and hit'n'run torrents, together with the number of hit'n'run allowance. (your hit'n'runs / monthly allowed hit'n'runs).
Torrent data (Updated, Status, Up, Down, Time left,
Ratio) are updated on the first "announce" after the download started (30-44 minutes).
You can manually force an announce if you want to see the actual data on your tab. For example, in uTorrent you can right click on any torrent and choose "Update
tracker".
Other announce-triggering actions:
- Stopping the torrent.
- Closing the client gracefully (hibernating your computer won't do this!)
Table legend:
Start: When you started downloading.
Updated: Time since your client sent an update of the torrent to the
tracker.
Status:
-
Seed: Torrent 100% downloaded
-
Leech: Torrent runs, but isn't 100% downloaded
- Stopped: Torrent doesn't run, or announce wasn't sent since starting it.
Up: Amount of data uploaded.
Down: Amount of data downloaded.
Time left: Minimum time you are required to stay in
seed.
Ratio: ...Or until a
ratio of 1.0 is reached
The table also has a simple colour code. Status, Time left and
Ratio columns are coloured green for finished torrents, and a different colour depending on the site's skin for unfinished torrents.
Sanctions
Those who have more hit'n'runs in a month than their user class allows for are sanctioned.
These users have their download rights revoked beginning from 00:01 on the first day of the next month. Sanctioning happens at the last day of the month, and only torrents that were downloaded at least 14 days prior are evaluated. Torrents that you downloaded less than 14 days ago will only be evaluated next month.
Closing of a month happens a couple of hours earlier than usual, so make sure not to leave your
seed required torrents until the very last hours.
First 3 occasions: Download revoked for 3 days.
4. occasion: Download revoked for 15 days.
5. occasion and further: Download revoked for 30 days.
The worst 1% will be punished with permanent download rights removal.
This time period can be redeemed with a Premium subscription. (So you won't have to wait * days to download again)
After the penalty expires, offenders will be able to download again, but will be subject to increased scrutiny.
