    Waffles.ch News

    From a Waffles Developer:

Hi, waffles dev here. In the interests of transparency, here's what's going on, on a more technical-side of things.

As you all know, waffles has had financial issues. Currently we're moving hosts, and yes, those BTCs coming out are payments for new hosting. The page you see being served right now is coming from the new server.

Unlike other new trackers, waffles has a couple of issues that's unique to us. First is that we're technically downsizing in order to save costs, and this means we have to deal with existing loads and users. Even right now, plenty of people are hitting our server purely from tracker announce hits, and the performance requirement for that is enormous. It's mainly compounded by fact that we only allow https connections for everything; nothing's sent over plain text. Of course we can fix it by adding more hardware... but as mentioned, financial issues. Old servers were already maxing out, so downsizing hurts.

Second and probably more important is our accrued technical debt. We've simply never had the dev and sysop power to do timely migrations, and that includes the code. A lot of it has been done as pretty terrible patch jobs, and this is causing delays in moving stuff over. Much of it was once written to be purely on the old servers and nowhere else. Gazelle codebase is terrible, but admittably, waffles code currently is worse. We have a surprising amount of backend software that isn't just a bunch of old PHP scripts; would have been a lot easier if it were!

Good news is that I'm working on it. It'll happen eventually. Server's hardware is being expanded, tweaks to db and server software are being done, automated deployment scripts, sections of waffles will likely need a rewrite too... Lots of work to do.

    So, hold on.

I believe they are genuinely trying their best, but they've been down for so long that my guess is they lost a very large member base already by the time they are back.
And with the momentum that Xanax (Apollo) and PTH are gaining, i believe waffles will still be on the back seat by the time they return

    So true and so sad...

Waffles had the best shot ever to become the #1 music tracker, but they screwed this opportunity with their huge downtime and the lack of updates while they are down.

A "we will be back" message within the first days after they got down, would be enough for users to keep seeding their torrents, but i bet that most users already deleted their torrents after 2-3 weeks without any sign of life.

btw they are still losing possible donations. I already mentioned on an other thread that the https link is not redirecting to the home page (with the message about the donations) but they fixed it and i have just noticed that a bookmark i had with the browse page (https://waffles.ch/browse.php) is also not redirecting to the right page so MANY users who have bookmarked the browse page (like i did) have NO IDEA about their BTC address neither for their plans to come back.

Don't trust them. They have been down for so long, I would not get your hopes up now and them fail and not come back, and still having a chance to make it here.

I would agree. If you are having financial and technical problems simultaneously you have a lot of work.
Of course they will lose some members, but i think that in light of recent developments in shutting down large communities we should stride to have as many large sites as possible and users to try and stay active seeders on many.

My personal feeling is these guys are morons and to a small degree thieves. If they where having money issues they should of made the community aware. Instead they launch a effort by actually promoting a system where donations would get you freeleach ability only to shut the site down weeks later. I personally feel like they screwed those who did donate to line there own pockets and left everyone blind to the fact they where doing so. If they where true and actually cared about the site/community they should of informed everyone about what was really going on.......Oh wait.....The communication with these a**holes is about that of a 4 year old as they have proven multiple times over the last 5 months. Anyways, I finally hope they are gone. Don't get me wrong, I like Waffles but like trader said in a earlier post. They did this to themselves by alienating the very user base they needed to keep them alive. The only way I would support this site again is if ALL the mindless brains running the site stepped down and promoted those who actually know how to run a private site and do it successfully. Waffles was run equally bad as What in my opinion, Just on opposite ends of the spectrum. Just my 2 cents!

I will have to say. After What was shutdown and I saw that Waffles was now down too, it made me very sad, confused, and scared at the same time. I am a bit leery to go back to Waffles for this very reason. I did donate to support their cause, and I would recommend those that are long time users to do the same. However, at this point, I don't think it looks very promising for them
