The British government claimed it was doing nothing wrong hassling the press by detaining their family. Its moves were defended to use anti-terrorism powers to lock up the partner of Guardian journalist Glenn Greenwald in London airport. Glenn Greenwald is known for threatening to provide scoops from Snowden’s files.

According to the information provided by Home Secretary Theresa May, David Miranda was held to prevent stolen information to aid terrorists. In other words, it is considered absolutely right that if the forces think somebody is in possession of very sensitive, stolen data which could help terrorists and risk lives or lead to a potential loss of life, they should be able to act, and they are.

Theresa May admitted that an independent reviewer was looking into the authorities conduct, while saying that she was aware of the decision to lock up David Miranda. In its turn, the US said that it didn’t ask for Miranda to be questioned. At the same time, there is one problem with the UK’s comments: if David Miranda was really arrested because of the terrorism fears, then why did the police forget to actually ask him any questions about the issue? The victim confirmed that the officers who questioned him asked no questions linked to terrorism.

Just a few days ago it appeared that the British government had entered the Guardian offices and destroyed hard drives with Snowden content. Apparently, it wasn’t revealed which brand of hard drive was it, but the UK move was surprising the US White House, with spokesman John Earnest admitting that it was a bit extreme. He said he couldn’t imagine the US police invading a newspaper and destroying hard drives in order to protect national security, like the UK is now doing. John Earnest confessed that he finds it difficult to imagine a scenario in which this could be appropriate, let alone that it was absolutely pointless – of course, there were copies on the leaked content, which will now be processed outside the country, maybe in Brazil or New-York.

So Home Secretary should understand that she is on hiding to no-where when the UK’s actions are being dubbed by right wing nutjobs in the United States as being a tad extreme.
