The huge attack suffered by the movie studio in the late 2014 had minor impact on its bottom line. The company has announcing its 3rd quarter results, saying that the hack would cost it only $15m in “investigation and remediation costs”. Sony also believes that it won’t suffer any long-term consequences.

A hacker group that was calling itself Guardians of Peace carried the attack. The US government blamed it on North Korea, because the aim of the attack was to force Sony to cancel The Interview, a comedy depicting the assassination of the country’s leader.

This was really an attack of the largest scale: Guardians of Peace compromised the personal records of 47,000 Sony employees and published online some embarrassing emails from the studio’s top management. Moreover, the hackers uploaded the unreleased Sony movies to the Internet.

As a result, the company had to cancel the release of The Interview due to a threat to theatregoers from the hackers. However, Sony then changed its mind following the criticism from Barack Obama and released the movie online and in the independent cinemas. The Interview collected $40 million in digital sales and another $7 million in cinemas worldwide. Since the budget of the movie was $44 million, Sony even got some profit.

Sony announced it doesn’t expect leaks of unreleased movies or damage to its computer systems would cause a significant loss, as the company had insurance against cyber attacks and therefore will be able to recover the costs. This announcement was made along with the company’s announcement of a turnaround in its struggling electronics division.

Despite the fact that The Interview pulled in quite a healthy receipt for a film that looked set to be canceled, its success still failed to help Sony’s motion-pictures division overall. According to financial experts, its sales are expected to have decreased 11.7% year-on-year from 2013, because the movie studio released fewer films and suffered in comparison with the preceding year (this was when its TV unit released the popular show Breaking Bad on video on demand).
