ABOUT 200 sacks of pirated CDs and DVDs worth some P50 million were confiscated by police and agents of the Optical Media Board (OMB) on Friday, June 1, at Cogon Market, Cagayan de Oro City's busiest public market.

The raid was in pursuant to Republic Act 9239 or the OMB law which ensures the promotion and protection of intellectual property rights in the country.

Lawyer Cyrus Paul Valenzuela, Legal Division chief of OMB-Manila, said four stalls were raided by the composite team in Cogon market.

Valenzuela said the OMB will continue to run after those engaging in the proliferation and selling of pirated DVDs which negatively impacts on the movie, music, and software industries.

The sacks of pirated DVDs were brought to OMB-Manila for proper disposition.

Friday’s raid was the first anti-piracy operation carried out so far this year. The last one was conducted in October last year in the same public market.

About 376 sacks of pirated CDs and DVDs worth an estimated P77 million were seized during the operations last year.
