Money, Distribution Networks & Piracy, Ghanaian Movie Industry struggling to survive
Ghanaian actress of Nigerian and Ghanaian descent, Yvonne Okoro has said though the Ghanaian Movie Industry is struggling, it is still surviving.
Okoro is one of the few movie stars advocating for more desirable strategies to reshape the movie industry.
When asked about the major issues troubling the industry, she opined that piracy and lack of distribution networks.
“Firstly people aren’t producing because there’s no money, there’s no funding and distribution networks. Even after you’ve produced your own movie it’s monopolised by one particular distribution network which is iRoko and sometimes when you want to give your movies to them, they may not offer you your just desert and on top of it all there’s piracy,” Yvonne Okoro said in an interview with KOD on Starr FM. Describing the movie industry now, Yvonne Okoro said,”Well the Movie Industry now does exist but is unprogressive, it’s still.”
According to ‘The Ghana Must Go’ actress, though funding of movies is a challenge, the major issues currently is the piracy and upsurge of telenovelas in the country.
Yvonne Okoro has received Ghana Movie Awards Best Actress Award in 2010 and was nominated for Africa Movie Academy Awards Best Actress twice in a row in 2011 and 2012 for her movies Pool Party and Single Six.
She is also a recipient of four Africa Magic Viewers’ Choice Award and in 2012 was honoured with a Distinguished Achievement Award at the Nigeria Excellence Awards.
