Empornium News
Dear pervs,
Our site has seen some difficult times recently. Long site and tracker outages, concerns about our ability to keep maintaining and improving the site, and staff motivation seems to be in a downward spiral. Obviously this affects the community as well, and our members are increasingly wondering: Is Emp dying?
In this post the Admin team would like to take a moment to fill you all in on what has been happening, and how we'd like to go on from here.
Let's get the big one out of the way first. This is a sensitive topic, but one that we decided would be best to share with the community as it's critical in order to understand what's been happening.
Donation woes:
The staff member with exclusive control over our donation fund has been keeping almost all of it for himself, making only a tiny amount available for tech staff to actually run the site. This has made funding a proper hosting setup difficult for a very long time. It was also unfair towards users who donated with the goal of supporting Empornium. Most of the donations were not used for their intended purpose. We apologise for that.
This situation has been very difficult to remedy, as this person also had control over critical parts of our hosting, and was in a position to pull the plug. Forcefully taking control of donations would have risked losing the site entirely.
We are happy to say, however, that we did eventually succeed in solving this problem, and that the person in question is no longer part of our staff. In order to make this happen, Admins and senior techs have worked for several years to methodically shift control of critical site components back to us. The final step in this long and arduous process was taken last Sunday, after which the full staff & FLS team was immediately briefed on what's been happening.
Shady stuff:
To be successful, the actions described above needed to be coordinated through covert communication, outside regular staff channels. And when you get used to acting secretive and shady much of the time, eventually you start doing it all of the time.
As Admins, we're sorry to say that in retrospect we've fallen into that trap. Big decisions were increasingly being made in a secret little group when they should have been discussed among the general staff team. This has been pointed out by staff for a long time, but the signals were not taken as seriously as they should have been.
The result has been declining motivation among staff, and very likely the loss of some valued staffers who were no longer getting enough satisfaction out of their volunteer work here. And by extent, this has affected the vibe of the whole site.
Brighter times ahead?
Finally taking full control of the site for the sake of our community feels like turning to a new page in our history. The covert channels are no longer needed and we can focus on improving the site rather than removing toxic elements holding us back. In this spirit we aim to return to a culture of transparency where all staff members can work together effectively, and contribute where they are most valuable. This ambition includes having a strong tech team where things won't grind to a halt if just one or two people are unavailable.
As nice as that sounds, it will take time and effort. Trust has to be rebuilt where it was lost, and structural problems that have been ignored for a long time need to be addressed. Things will not magically get better overnight. We believe we see light at the end of the tunnel, though.
We'd like to express our gratitude to the staff and the entire community for sticking with us through the hard times. Thank you everyone! :emplove: :emplove: :emplove:
Feel free to ask any questions you may have in the forum thread. But keep in mind that there are still details we cannot share in the interest of security.

That's extremely difficult. I wonder if the lack of invites is related to the challenges just keeping the lights turned on with what sounds like embezzlement going on.
With luck, things can move in the right direction and they'll be ready to grow again.

New user
Appreciate the Transparency
Thanks for the update and willingness to inform the community. Do you have a "No Doxing Agreement" with the former Donation Manager? Wishing Emp a bright user filled future, O and we can go get our donations back, could really use a name or email to get started though, pretty please?
