Account Security Advice

Empornium experiences constant attempts to breach accounts. We 'd like to give you some tips on account and password security.

But first, a warning:
Restoring Breached Accounts is usually not possible
If the verification process can't be fully completed with all the details or the account has been breached in the past, we will not be able to restore your account.

How to avoid account breaches
You can easily avoid losing access to Empornium by setting up a safe, unique password and a working e-mail address also secured with a safe, unique password. Read the tips below to learn more.

Is the e-mail address for your Empornium Account still active?
To be able to recover lost passwords or restore accounts in cases of breaches, you need to have a valid e-mail address.

Do you use a unique username / password combination on Empornium?
Never re-use your password online. If one site gets breached, without a unique password on that site you need to worry about all your logins.
Here's a list of 50 passwords you should not use, to give you a general idea of what type of passwords not to use. They also have more advice regarding passwords.
You can test your password idea on this site. Do NOT enter any real password! We do recommend using a password manager and not trying to come up with passwords on your own.

Password Management

  • A password should be hard to guess (see paragraph above). Good practice is a chain of words that build a sentence that can be remembered, but is hard to guess. An example would be "Without-porn-I-can't-exist." Sprinkling in some more special characters and typos is also not a bad idea, but don't make it complicated for yourself. The longer the password, the safer, even if it is just a longer sentence. On Empornium, you can use up to 42 characters for your password.
  • Pick a different password for every website and service. If one gets breached, which has even happened to Yahoo, Playstation/Sony and Dropbox, then only this one site is affected and you won't have to change your password on all the sites. This is obviously also a lot safer.
  • Nobody can remember all these passwords anymore. That's where password managers come in. These programs work like a safe inside the computer. All your passwords are encrypted and only accessible by entering the master password. From now on, this and the password to log in to your computers will be the only passwords you have to remember.
  • Password managers generate secure passwords for you and ensure that long and complex passwords are always just a few clicks away. We can recommend Keepass, it is a free open source password manager with great functionality and available on all operating systems.
  • Last but not least: Never ever share your passwords with anyone. Ever.

Two-Factor-Authentication (2FA) with TOTP
On Empornium we offer Timed One-Time-Passwords (TOTP) to further strengthen the security of your account. We recommend using it. This will require you to tap a button on your smartphone and type a six digit number when you log in to Empornium.
Please read our short Security Page guide on how to use 2FA on Empornium. It's really easy.
