DMCA requests overwhelm WordPress transparency report
WordPress released its first transparency report of the year this past week with its primary focus on data covered under the Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA).
The website-building platform received 4,679 copyright requests for content removal, and WordPress at least partially complied with 57 percent. Third-party companies filed the majority of requests, including Web Sheriff, an anti-piracy company. It issued 218 notices.
While many other companies primarily receive requests for user data, WordPress received only 69 and produced data for 46 percent of those. Thirty-five requests were filed in the U.S., most of which were subpoenas.
One request came from an email in which law enforcement requested information about a user who “created a website, posted a picture of our complainant (not her but look similar)” and circulated it to her friends.
The company received zero National Security Requests.
