2022-09-11 - What is DigitalCoreClub?
Hi Club members!

We have a lot of new members and it's a good time to re-share the staff's vision of what DigitalCoreClub is all about...

DigitalCoreClub is, at its core (pun intended), a private torrent tracker with a scene flavor. That's great, but...what does that mean?

A private tracker is a torrent tracker that only connects members to other members, and not just any random client on the internet. This enhances security of all parties and allows the staff to help create a healthy, happy community.

"Scene flavor" might be a little bit harder to explain, but basically means that our members primarily share "scene" releases. Not sure what the "scene" is? That's beyond the scope of this post, but a good place to start learning more is https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Warez_scene

Why this matters is because our leading posters tend to upload content directly from the various release groups that make the content, and this content is released in a number of different formats including
Ready-to-watch (mp4, AVI, etc.)
Archived ("RARed"
Disk folders (common with films)

As a scene tracker, a substantial amount of torrented material shared through DCC is archived: multi-piece, compressed folders that need to be decomprompressed to use. There are a number of advantages to distributing releases in multiple pieces as, even today, internet connectivity is not universally perfect and it's often easier to move multiple small chunks of data around than one giant chunk of data. That is, in fact, one of the core reasons for torrenting.

The downside of archived releases, for some, is that they need to be decompressed and that means that you will use roughly twice the space that downloading ready-to-watch content does because, perhaps obviously, you now have a release stored twice. Many of our oldest members are scene enthusiasts, enjoy collecting scene releases and don't see this as a problem. Obviously, others are less enthusiastic and only want ready-to-watch media.

What's the staff's position?
DCC was founded as a scene-oriented tracker, will stay that way and that means that there will always be, to some extent, RARed releases on DCC.
Most media releases on DCC are ready-to-watch and very few releases can only be found as RARs
Torrent descriptions contain, at a minimum, the names and number of files in a torrent and it should be obvious at a glance whether or not any given torrent has RARed files

So the community likes scene releases, some scene releases are RARed and they're here stay. That's why it's particularly rude for people that are new to the community and haven't invested any time in learning about us to make forum posts complaining about RARed releases, sometimes within hours of joining. We like them, they're not going away, they're not even the majority of releases and it's particularly bad form to join a club and start insisting that things change.

Don't be "that guy" or "that girl" - don't make posts in the forums griping about RARs because that's not going to endear you to the staff and it's just a bad look overall.

The staff suggests that if you strongly disagree with this and have an argument beyond "muh hard drive space" to reach out to the staff but not make post number 1,987 on this topic in the forums.

Thanks for reading and happy sharing!
