This year has been a very tough year for the torrent sites as there are a lot of challenges that hinder their services. But then, despite these problems The Pirate Bay, ExtraTorrent, Rarbg, Torrentz2, 1337x has made it become 2016's most popular torrent websites.

According to TorrenFreak, 2016 has been an unforgettable year for torrent users because with just a period of just a few months, numerous of the largest torrent sites disappeared from the scene. From KickassTorrents, through Torrentz to What.cd, up to other torrent giants have left the scene.

During this year, a lot of sites have closed their doors, either willingly or after being enforced by a court order. This year has really been a bad year for torrents, after two known sites were pushed offline in a matter of weeks last summer.

To sum up, there are three sites that were included on the top ten most popular sites at the start of the year are now gone. Conceivably, with the death of What.cd one of the largest private torrent followers disappeared as well.

Although, 2016 has been a tough year for torrent sites some of them were still acknowledge as 2016's most popular torrent sites. As a matter of fact, Tech Times reported that Alexa put The Pirate Bay at the top of the list, at number 120 in worldwide website hits.

It can be remembered that TPB has been on top for years, but it has lost its crown to Kickass Torrents earlier in 2016. But when that site was shut down, The Pirate Bay quickly got the top spot and has remained firm ever since.

The second with a worldwide Alexa rank of 240 is ExtraTorrent has been a huge recipient of the closure of Kickass Torrents since the latter's former users started to migrate to the site due to its many listings and user-friendly interface. At no. 3 is Rarbg, which has also obtained a notable amount of new users since the shakeup. It now ranks at 288 on Alexa's worldwide website rankings.

On the fourth spot is Torrentz2 having Alexa ranking of 431 which is basically the second coming of meta search engine Torrentz that has stopped providing service soon after the closure of Kickass Torrents. Lastly, 1337x took the fifth spot 5 on the most popular torrent sites, with a ranking on Alexa of 826. The site has doubled its effort to attract new users through improved design as well as new community forums.

The government offices as well as Google are doing its best to stop piracy. But then, these torrent sites are doubling its effort to still provide services to its patrons.
