Creating one shortcut after another eventually gets your desktop filled. The lazy man’s way is to create a folder and place all shortcuts there. Needless to say it’s not the best option.

Aesthetics are not the only concern when creating an abundance of folders for little to no reason. Navigation is greatly affected by this, especially since Windows doesn’t show folder size in the File Explorer so you know which are empty.

Luckily, developers created computer applications with the sole purpose of sniffing out empty directories to make your PC not only look a bit better, but just to get rid of folders that have absolutely no use anymore. Below is an example of such a utility that is sure to come in handy.
Tracing and removing empty folders

Step 1: Download, install, and run Remove Empty Folders.

Step 2: Specify the target location in the upper field. Use the Browse button for more accuracy.

Step 3: Hit the Scan button and wait for the process to finish. It takes about a minute at most.

Step 4: Analyze the Right panel to know what is going to be deleted and why.

Step 5 (optional): Right-click an identified directory to either Open in Explorer, Protect, or Add to Ignore List.

Step 6: Press Delete Folders and watch as your computer becomes free of empty directories.

Note: Running the program with administrator privileges enables an option in the Settings menu that integrates it in the Context Menu for more flexibility.
