How to Install and Use Firefox on iOS

You're most likely using Safari on your iPad because it's the default browser and it's fully hooked into the iOS operating system, but it's not your only option.

Firefox has been available for iOS since 2015, but the 2018 iPad version of the much-improved Firefox Quantum introduces several helpful new features. You can now re-order open tabs, access split-screen mode, stay in private browsing mode all the time, and much more.

These new mobile and tablet-focused features are just some of the compelling reasons why now is a great time to check out Mozilla's browser on your iPad. Below we explain how to install and set up the browser on your devices, and how you can make the most of it on your smartphone and tablet.

    Download Firefox
If you don’t already have Firefox on your iPad, download and install it from the App Store. The first time you launch the app, Firefox displays a quick tour of the latest features. From there, you can sign into your Firefox account, if you have one, or you can just start browsing.

    Firefox Account
Why use a Firefox account? Having an account allows you to sync bookmarks, passwords, open tabs, and other settings and content anywhere you use the browser—Windows, macOS, Linux, iOS, and Android. To create or log into your account, tap the Sign into Firefox button at the end of the tour or tap the hamburger icon () in the upper-right and select the option to Sign in to Sync. You can then sign in or create an account.

    Control Sync Settings
You can then choose which items are synced through your account by opening the hamburger icon and selecting Settings. Everything will be automatically synced by default, but you can deselect any items you don't want to include by toggling the appropriate switch. If you have no interest in syncing these setting across devices, tap Disconnect Sync to turn syncing off entirely. Now, we can check out some of the features included in the browser.

    Reorganize Open Tabs
Let's say you're working with multiple web pages and need to reorganize the tabs. You can do this by first opening new pages with the + icon. If you want to reorganize your tabs, tap the number icon in the upper-right to display thumbnails of the open tabs. From this thumbnail view, you can move pages around to change the order in which they appear. Just drag and drop a page into a different spot.

    Split View Mode

Firefox supports the iPad's Split View feature. This means you can view Firefox and another app side-by-side. This trick works more easily if the other app is already in the Dock at the bottom of the screen. With Firefox already open, swipe up the screen to display the Dock. Drag the app you want to view to the right of the screen until it appears as a floating pane.

    Split Screen
Drag that pane to the top of the screen until it fits into place. You can now vary the width of each window by dragging the separation bar between them to the left or right.

You can drag and drop text, images, and links from Firefox to another app, such as Notes, Messages, or Mail. When you're done, drag the second app slightly down and then swipe it all the way to the right of the screen to remove it.

You can even use split screen to view two different web pages at the same time. With Firefox open, drag the icon for another mobile browser installed on your iPad and release it alongside Firefox.

    Private Browsing

Firefox has simplified the process of opening a new page in a private browsing tab. Private Browsing does not save your browsing history, cookies, or other information for a specific website. Once you close the browser, all that data gets wiped.

To use this feature, tap the private browsing mask icon in the upper-left. Open a web page. The mask icon turns purple to indicate that this mode is active. Even better, any new page you open as a new tab automatically uses private browsing mode. To turn off this mode, tap the mask icon again.

    Set Default Email Service

Unfortunately, you can't make Firefox (or Chrome) your default browser over Safari, but you can control the default email app that pops up when you click a mail link in Firefox. To do this, click the hamburger icon () and select Settings > Mail App and select the service you wish to make your new default. You can choose between Mail, Outlook, Yahoo Mail, and Gmail. The next time you click a mail link, your default app will open.

    Sharing Web Pages

Here's another trick. You can send an open web page in Firefox from one device to another. First, make sure you're signed into your Firefox account on your various devices. Open the page you want to send. Tap the ellipsis icon () at the end of the address bar and select Send to Device. A window will pop up asking you which device you wish to send the page to. Tap Send.

    Receiving Web Pages
A notification will appear on the receiving device to let you know it received the page. Open Firefox on that device, and the page you sent pops up.

    Night Mode and Other Tips
Open the hamburger menu in the top-right corner of Firefox and you will see several settings that can help you. Enable Night Mode to darken the screen so you can view it in low-light conditions. Trigger Hide Images to remove images and speed up the web page. By enabling Tracking Protection you can block websites from tracking your online activities.
