There’s been a lot of fuss regarding customization options for the upcoming Windows. While Microsoft tries to find balance between requests and functionality, one theme in particular seems to appeal, the Dark Theme.

So far, there’s been no direct way of switching to this Dark Theme through basic features. However, you can apply it to default aspects, and even the Settings menu. Some registries need to be tweaked or added, and as it comes to show, this can now be done for Microsoft Edge / Project Spartan.

This became available in build 10135, which you can also install in a virtual machine. Following the steps below is guaranteed to change the browser’s theme so that it matches the rest of the elements in Windows 10.

Bringing Edge / Project Spartan to the Dark side

Step 1: Press Win + R so that the Run utility pops up.

Step 2: Access the Registry Editor by writing down regedit and pressing Enter.

Step 3: Carefully navigate to this location: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\Curre ntVersion\Themes\Personalize.

Step 4: Right-click an empty space in the right pane and choose to create a New DWORD (32-bit) Value.

Step 5: Name it AppsUseLightTheme and press Enter to confirm.

Step 6: Double-click it to make sure the Value Data field is 0 (zero).

Step 7: Close the Registry Editor and restart Windows Explorer so that the new theme is applied.

Note: If the new look does not appeal to you, reverting changes can easily be done by changing the DWORD value to 1, or completely removing it.
