Red face Your setup for Torrenting?

    Hello everyone!
I currently use my desktop to download and seed. Thinking about building a ununtu server for everything or using a synology nas. I am curious to know what kind of setup you guys are running, desktop, server, nas etc. I am just trying to get ideas from you.. Give details if you can.. OS, HD space, Torrent app

    Nothing special ATM...

    Mountain Lion Hackintosh mini
    Core i3 w/ 8gb Ram
    128gb SSD for OS
    750GB HD for downloading
    Transmission...

UBUNTU all the way .... Good choice.
A Node 304 case from FRACTAL DESIGN builds a nice little server that you can tuck away in a cupboard. Pop in a Mini ITX board with Atom processor and its well good enough for a torrenting / backup / storage device.
Much more practical than a NAS.

I have long been battling with the same issue as you. As such, I have tried a few different setups. My two favorite, I'll outline below.

    1. Synology NAS
This worked well for me to begin with. Synology have an amazing interface and fantastic built-in clients for Surveillance, File, Web and Torrenting servers. As I said this was great for me to begin with but as my needs grew (more disks and more space) I had to rethink my strategy.

Which leads me to number 2 and my current setup.

    2. HTPC/Torrenting Box/Backup Server/File Server
Okay, I know, A lot of services on one machine but That's how I wanted to build it. A complete all in one box.
I have a Silverstone HTPC case which has two 5.25" drives, 3 x 3.25" and 1 x 2.5" HDD slots. I have customized the case a little.. I made use of the two 5.25" bay's by installing a 3-in-2 HotSwap cage in there with a Sata Backplane. So now I have 3 hotswap sata drives in the front of the computer and 3 internal hdd bays. In terms of other hardware, see below.

    Hardware:
    Silverstone HTPC Case
Mini ITX Mobo with HDMI on board
Core i5-2400 Processor (more than capable of 1080p playback
    8GB Ram
    3 x 1TB HDD's in Hot Swap
    2 x 2TB HDD's (internal)
    1 x 60GB SSD for OS

    Software:
    Windows 8
    uTorrent
    SickBeard
    CouchPotato
    XBMC
Custom Scripts for automation that I wrote.

I am running all of this on Windows 8. The reason I wanted to use Win8 was to make use of the StoragePools app that is built in to the OS. This allows me to pool all of my HDD's so the OS presents them as one drive with one drive letter. I can also create a softRAID set from the setup too.

So while it looks like I have 7TB of storage I really only have half (3.5TB) that because my data is being mirrored across all disks to create a backup. So if one drive fails, I can replace it without losing data. This may not be to everyone's liking but it's a setup I love and am proud to say I have built on my own.

As for torrenting etc. I am using uTorrent for all my downloads. I have a script that runs on torrent completion to copy the completed torrents to TV Shows or Movies folders (depending on the name) and then SickBeard and CouchPotato grab those files, process them and put them in the correct Movies and TV Shows directories. Once they have been processed XBMC is notified to update the library and add the new files.

All in all my Media Center is perfect for what I need. It is fully automated, and has plenty of space for me.
It does everything I need it to and a little more.

As I said, my setup wouldn't not be ideal for everyone but I just wanted to share what I had done.

wow sounds like a pretty sweet setup. I love xbmc I've used it for yrs. I recently got a rasp pi and installed openlec on it. I am having lots of buffering issues with it atm though. I bought a synology small one with two slots. The UI is pretty awesome. I might use it for archiving/backups and build an ubuntu nas as a seedbox.. I love the idea of scripting everything to sort things out. Couch and sickb are pretty awesome apps. Are you using the forked torrent version of sickb to do your shows? There is nothing else like building your own stuff and tweaking it to your liking. It's a great feeling.

Yeah, I do like my setup. Like I said, I had been through a few before I landed at this one. I was using XBMCBuntu at one stage too. I would have kept with it too but I was getting a lot of issues with playback and things. I ended up just using it as a NAS for a while before I built the Windows machine.

If you end up going with Ubuntu, use a program called 'Greyhole' for your storage management. It's like a softRAID. It's amazing! Having the ability to mirror on certain files was such a good thing. I wish there was a windows app like it. It's so customisable and just worked flawlessly. I might revisit it as a standalone storage server later down the track if I have some spare hardware.

For SB I am using the forked TorrentProviders branch. I have been talking with the Dev of the branch to get some more providers added so have been helping him with that which has been good!

Good luck with your setup mate.
If you want any help with anything I' be more than happy to assist where I can.

    Sure do!
    https://github.com/junalmeida/Sick-Beard
The current supported torrent providers are:
Kat.ph, Torrentz.eu, DialyTvTorrents, ThePirateBay.se, TorrentLeech. More wil be added to the list in time.

With regards to reseeding, you need to be careful with what SB does to your files. You can tell it to leave a copy of the original files when it does the post processing so it doesn't change the names of the files and things. That way you'll have a copy of the downloaded file which you can reseed and a copy of the new file which has been renamed and post processed.

If I want to reseed a file I'll just copy the file to my FinishedTorrents directory and seed from there.

If you need a hand with setup, let me know. I'd be more than happy to lend a hand.

Am I the only one having a very-low energy consuming PC just for torrenting?

    Asus EEEbox PC
    1GB RAM
1TB Hard Disk + 2TB Hard Disk USB

More than enough. It even streams HD content to my TV with a DLNA server.
