MOSCOW, June 30 (Itar-Tass) - RIA Novosti. The Pentagon analyzes the cost and consequences of a large-scale withdrawal or transfer of US-based American troops amid growing tension between US President Donald Tramp and German Chancellor Angela Merkel, The Washington Post reports referring to four sources.

According to the publication, Trump expressed this interest at a meeting with his advisers. The interlocutors of the newspaper said that the president was impressed by the size of the contingent and complained that other countries invest little in general security and do not spend enough on defense.

Sources at the same time stressed that while in the Pentagon they are only studying various options.

The information alarmed European officials who, according to the publication, are trying to understand whether Trump intends to really realize his idea or this is his tactic of negotiations before the NATO summit in Brussels.

A representative of the White House National Security Council said that the US administration did not entrust the Pentagon with a special analysis of the consequences of the withdrawal of troops from Germany. According to him, such actions are "normal".

Representative of the military department Eric Paon, in turn, denied the full or partial withdrawal of US troops from Germany and also said that the department regularly conduct similar studies.

At the NATO summit in 2014, it was decided that in the future all members of the alliance would bring their defense spending to two percent of GDP. Trump repeatedly called on alliance partners to implement these agreements, threatening to reduce US participation in common security programs for NATO member countries.
