US President Donald Trump has blasted BuzzFeed News via Twitter — saying it was a “very sad day for journalism” — after special counsel Robert Mueller’s office disputed the media outlet’s report on his alleged real estate deal with the Russians.

Mr Trump also took the opportunity to remind his followers that the media outlet has it out for his administration, having previously released a Democrat-backed dossier on what he claims the “entire Russian probe is based.”

The New York Post reported that the president went on to say that “fake news is truly the ENEMY OF THE PEOPLE!” — and he also re-tweeted a pair of posts made by Fox News correspondent Geraldo Rivera, which ridiculed BuzzFeed as well.

Mr Rivera called the article “egregious” and an “example of rampant unfairness”.

The BuzzFeed report alleges that Trump told Michael Cohen — his personal lawyer — to lie to Congress about a Trump Tower project in Moscow. The president has repeatedly denied having any business dealings with the Russians.

Special counsel Robert Mueller’s office released a statement following the article’s release, disputing what was reported.

“BuzzFeed’s description of specific statements to the Special Counsel’s Office, and characterisation of documents and testimony obtained by this office, regarding Michael Cohen’s Congressional testimony are not accurate,” wrote special counsel spokesman Peter Carr.

Mr Trump later went on a Twitter rank, claiming he was being treated worse than any other president since Abraham Lincoln and that the media as losing credibility.

The outlet’s editor-in-chief, Ben Smith, later issued his own statement — saying he and everyone else at BuzzFeed “stand by our reporting and the sources who informed it.”

“We urge the Special Counsel to make clear what he’s disputing,” Mr Smith said.
