On Friday, Wikileaks published a CIA malware project known as Athena. According to the leaked documents, the Athena malware is capable of hijacking all the Windows versions starting from XP to Windows 10.

The malware consists of another module called Hera which affects PCs running Windows 8 to Windows 10. The malware is a collaborative effort between CIA and Siege Technologies based in New Hampshire, US. After infecting a target computer, Athena can be used to steal data and transfer it to a remote server. It can be used to deploy to deploy other malicious programs.

“Once installed, the malware provides a beaconing capability (including configuration and task handling), the memory loading/unloading of malicious payloads for specific tasks and the delivery and retrieval of files to/from a specified directory on the target system,” writes Wikileaks.

“It allows the operator to configure settings during runtime (while the implant is on target) to customize it to an operation.”

Athena is the ninth iteration to Wikileaks’ weekly release regime which was kicked off with the publication of the Dark Matter in March, followed by Marble, Grasshopper, Hive, Weeping Agel, Scribbles, Archimedes, and After Midnight.
