APPLE has marked World Emoji Day on Tuesday by giving users a preview of the new images coming in the next emoji update.

The update includes more than 70 images of people, animals, food and other objects.

The ever-popular emoji faces now include redhead and bald versions as well as grey and curly hairstyle options.

Australia features prominently in the animal update with a kangaroo, parrot and lobster now available.

Foodies can now illustrate their messages with a mango, lettuce, cupcake or mooncake.

Other new emojis include superheroes, the infinity symbol and a nazar amulet, which traditionally wards off evil.

The new emojis are approved by the Unicode consortium - a a non-profit corporation dedicated to maintaining internet standards - and will be available on all Apple devices later this year.
