Two of Australia’s major banks were hit with technical issues on the biggest day of retail trading for the calendar year - and even gift card holders could not avoid trouble.

Both ANZ and Westpac had issues throughout the day, while Coles Myer Group gift cards were also unable to be accepted.

Frustrated shoppers and retailers took to social media to criticise the banks after technical issues affected EFTPOS machines around the country early in the day.

Westpac became aware of the issue around 9am Perth time, however it took two hours for the problem to be resolved.

The issue also affected the banking app.

ANZ also suffered similar problems, with technical difficulties affecting its banking app and EFTPOS facilities.

The bank said the problem had since been rectified, however the outage was in place for more than five hours.

Both banks were inundated with complaints on social media.

Meanwhile, shoppers with gift cards were not exempt from trouble at the register, with Coles Myer reporting its group-wide gift card system was down.

The retail giant was still able to take Myer gift cards, but any Coles Myer Group gift cards were unable to be accepted.

The troubles at the till come in the wake of huge traffic issues faced by Perth customers trying to get to DFO Perth today.
