Gambling-related ads fester politician's website

Visitors landing on Thom Tillis’ website on Wednesday noticed a highly disturbed online space of the Republican nominee for the Senate, with advertisements scattered all over the place.

The politician’s domain hosted multiple pages with ads for gambling programs, promoting large cash bonuses.

The altered space has been captured by Buzzfeed, where it is reported that a flurry of Gum Tree Pokie Machine ads were on display, some of the pages promising tips on how to hack the Pokie Machines.

According to some sources, behind the incident there seems to be someone of Russian origin, because part of the scripting was written in the Cyrillic alphabet.

In a cached version from Google, we observed that a page presented a top of the online Australian casinos, all links pointing to bathler.net, a domain registered in Russia.

This evidence fuels the theory that Russian hackers were behind the attack. However, someone who did not agree with Tillis’ political beliefs could have done this, too.

Fans of the politician can rest assured now, as the website has been cleaned of the unauthorized content. An official stance about the incident has not been provided by the representatives of the political campaign for Thom Tillis’ run for the Senate.
