COMMONS Speaker John Bercow has enjoyed more than £70,000 of freebies such as VIP Wimbledon and football tickets since starting the job in 2009.

The controversial figure has logged almost £10k of perks in the last year according to the official register.

The tennis fan has gone to Wimbledon every year for the past five years getting £23,060 worth of tickets from the All England Lawn Tennis Club and £12,050 worth of freebies from the Lawn Tennis Association.

The Arsenal supporter has also enjoyed hospitality at Premier League football grounds around the country, receiving £18,444.63 in tickets to clubs including Chelsea, Manchester City and West Ham.

According to a Daily Telegraph investigation, Mr Bercow, who earns £153,145 a year and has a grace-and-favour home in Westminster, received £18,949.80 in 2016-17, £16,948.83 in 2017-18 and a further £9,296 so far this financial year.

That comes to a total of £71,158.68 in gifts, benefits and hospitality from UK sources since he became Speaker in 2009, according to Parliament's Register of Members' Financial Interests.

Last night Tory MP Andrew Bridgen blasted: "Sounds like game, set and match to John Bercow.

"I am sure that these revelations will only reinforce the already established public view of the Speaker."
