Import of bacon to Ukraine against the background of the decline in the number of pigs due to the African plague amounted to 40-50 thousand tons in 2017, and this product will continue to be in short supply. This was reported by the head of the Association "Pig breeders of Ukraine" Arthur Loza, the "Ukrainian News".

"The main imported categories among pork products were lard and by-products in 2017. Ukraine has long been experiencing a deficit of fat and import-dependent in this segment, which is not a trend until last year," Loza said.

According to him, the crisis situation in the industry is reinforced by the ASF and the reduction in the number of livestock, in particular in household plots.

"Therefore, we observed an unusual situation when the cost of fat sometimes equaled the cost of meat in consumer markets at certain periods, a trend that will continue - fat is in short supply," Loza said.

All imported lard, according to Loza, is fully used for processing, the production of sausages, and in the food markets, mainly products for final consumption, coming from the segment of household plots.

The total import of pork (meat, fat, fat, by-products) in 2017 is estimated at 95 thousand tons, according to preliminary data, while in 2016 the figure was 78 thousand tons. Exports of the same products increased compared with 2016 from 9 thousand tons to about 15-16 thousand tons.

Recall that in 2017, the "meat basket" went up by a third, and the product-leader of the price increase - fat.
