Telcos wheel out discounted telco deals ahead of Christmas
TELCOS are pouncing on our addiction to smartphones by rolling out attractive new deals to lure in Christmas shoppers.
Some of the largest providers including Telstra, Optus and Vodafone have recently revealed new promo offers including cheaper plans, bundling incentives and larger quantities of data.
While smaller telcos including Moose have announced a ridiculously cheap one cent low-data SIM-only offer, Woolworths Mobile is giving customers a $300 discount on some devices.
TELSTRA DATA DEAL
Latest figures from Deloitte found 89 per cent of Australians own at least one smartphone and telco comparison website WhistleOut’s spokesman Kenny McGilvary said this was a marketing haven for telcos.
“Christmas time is peak retail period with people actively looking for things to buy, whether it’s a gift for themselves or others,” he said.
“So it makes sense for telco providers to put on great deals to capture people’s interest while they have their credit cards at the ready.”
But Mr McGilvary warned shoppers to make sure the offers suited them and if buying for someone else, “stick to no contract options so changing is easy if things don’t work out”.
The latest deals include:
• Telstra: Telstra: 60GB SIM-only deal for $49 per month, discounted by $20 per month.
• Optus: iPhone XR 64GB on a lease plan — 100GB for $69 per month or $84 per month if you buy the phone on a contract.
• Vodafone: Bundle your services and get 5 to 20 per cent off the total bill.
• Woolworths Mobile: Save $300 over 24 month off various Samsung devices.
• Moose Mobile: Low-data SIM-only no contract plans from 1 cent per month.
MOOSE 1 CENT DEALS
Vodafone’s chief commercial officer Ben McIntosh said Bundle and Save deal was “just in time for Christmas as a way to reward our existing customers with a discount on their bill and a bit of extra cash in their back pocket.”
Moose Mobile’s chief executive officer Dean Lwin said he hoped the 1 cent deals would see them “stick with us after giving us a go.”
“For the vast majority of Australians, if you’re paying anymore than $25 per month for your mobile phone, you’re paying too much.”
