Tehran would support Damascus against any foreign aggression, a top adviser to Iran’s supreme leader said on Wednesday, according to Reuters. Ali Akbar Velayati’s statement, reported by state TV, was an apparent response to US President Donald Trump’s comments on a possible military strike on Syria. “We will stand by Syria’s government against any foreign aggression,” Velayati said during his visit to Eastern Ghouta in Syria, adding that Iran backs Damascus in its fight against the US and Israel. Seven Iranian military personnel were reportedly killed in Sunday’s airstrike on a Syrian airbase. Israel has neither confirmed nor denied launching the attack.
