California fires: West Aussies return home from US fire fight
FIVE Western Australian firefighters have returned home after more than a month in the US fighting the largest fire in Californian history.
Parks and Wildlife Service firefighters John Fishwick, Tim Hutton, Peter Barmess, Leigh Sage and Beverly Gardiner spent five weeks battling multiple wildfires across California, Oregon and Washington State.
Ms Gardiner, who is the Mid West regional fire leader for Parks and Wildlife, was based in California as a division supervisor fighting the Mendocino Complex Fire.
She said the fire, which started on July 27, had burnt through more than 400,000 acres and was still not contained.
“Fighting the fire was challenging in many ways because we were facing language barriers, difference in terrain, different vegetation and a different way of fighting the fires,” she said.
“Because of the steep terrain, hand tools were used over machinery, so there were more people needed on the ground. We also were faced with falling trees, rocks and boulders coming down the hills.”
She said she was humbled by the patriotism and appreciation from locals.
“It was very humbling because we had people crossing the street to talk to us and thank us for flying over to help them. They would offer to buy us dinner or a coffee just to show their appreciation,” she said.
“Unfortunately we did have a fatality, a few people injured and many homes lost, which was difficult to see.”
A total 146 firefighters from Australia and New Zealand were sent to help fight the fires.
