‘Sex cult leader’ Keith Raniere refused bail in New York
KEITH Raniere, the man his followers refer to as Vanguard, has been denied bail in a New York Court.
In his first appearance since being arrested in Mexico last month of sex trafficking and forced labour charges a judge issued a permanent order of detention, WYNT reports.
Raniere responded “Yes, your honour” in response to the judge’s questions but did not enter a plea during the brief hearing in Brooklyn.
A preliminary hearing is scheduled for April 27 at 11am local time.
Prosecutors allege that Raniere abused women and girls in the NXIVM (pronounced Nexium) and branded his initials on their bodies.
He recruited a number of actresses including Smallville stars Kristin Kreuk and Allison Mack, Battlestar Galactica actress Nicki Clyne, and Dynasty star Catherine Oxenberg’s daughter, India, using their star power to attract other followers.
Kruik put out a statement after Raniere’s arrest saying she left the group five years ago, did not experience any nefarious activities and has denounced his alleged abuse of women.
Mack, Clyne and Oxenberg are all said to be supporters of his.
Kruek says she distanced herself from Mack after she left the group. They starred as Lana Lang and Chloe Sullivan in Smallville.
The Daily Mail reported that Mack has taken control of the group since Raniere’s arrest.
It also reported that Mack had married Clyne, a Canadian citizen, in an effort to keep her in the US.
Catherine Oxenberg has spoken out against the group, saying she wants her daughter to come home. She was reportedly in court today at Raniere’s hearing
“I was completely ignorant about these sorts of the dangers and traps associated with these so-called personal growth self help groups. It’s an $11 billion, completely unregulated industry, so I reached out to a lot of experts for guidance,” she told People magazine. “I want to help all the young women affected by this cult. They are the victims of human trafficking, which is slavery.”
“I want my daughter to know I love her and that I want her back in my life,” she said.
Founded by Raniere in 1998, NXIVM is pitched as a self-help group that offers “programs that provide the philosophical and practical foundation necessary to acquire and build the skills for success, it’s website reads.
Based in Albany, New York, around 160,000 joined the group led by Raniere.
