Police confirm stabbings at Borough Market, say a van slammed into pedestrians at London Bridge and respond to incident in Vauxhall area.

LONDON — Police in central London are responding to a series of violent incidents, amid reports of gunfire, stabbings and more than one person killed.

London Bridge was closed after a white van reportedly mounted the pavement at speed at around 10.10 pm, hitting a number of pedestrians.

Police later confirmed that there was a separate incident in Borough Market, on the south side of the river Thames and very close to London Bridge. Armed officers have been dispatched amid reports of gunfire and stabbings from multiple witnesses. Police have confirmed reports of stabbings.

“As well as #LondonBridge officers have also responsed (sic) to an incident in #BoroughMarket. We have armed police at the scenes,” the Met Police tweeted. The BBC reported that the police are still searching for three suspects.

Separately, they said they were responding to an incident in the Vauxhall area — around 2km to the south west. Vauxhall tube station later reopened, although it is not clear whether that incident is over.

A Downing Street spokesperson said: “The prime minister is in contact with officials and is being regularly updated on the incident at London Bridge.”

The van on London Bridge was reportedly travelling south from the City towards Borough High Street, an area with lots of pubs and restaurants.

Several police vehicles and ambulances are attending the scene. London Ambulance Service tweeted: “Multiple resources attending an incident at #LondonBridge, please avoid the area. Only call 999 in an Emergency.”

The number of casualties is not clear but there are reports of serious injuries. The BBC reported that police had told them there is more than one fatality.

The Met Police issued its “Run, Hide, Tell” advice via Twitter.
