SAJID Javid yesterday signalled free movement will have to continue after a ‘No Deal’ Brexit as he slapped down his own Immigration Minister.

The Home Secretary said a “sensible transition period” would be required at the border immediately after March 29 if Britain crashes out of the EU without a deal.

Amid complete chaos, he said Immigration Minister Caroline Nokes was wrong to tell MPs on Tuesday that bosses would have to check whether EU nationals have the right to work in the UK in a No Deal Brexit.

Sources claim the problem stems from the fact it will be all-but impossible to have a new border system up and running in just five months’ time that could differentiate between those EU nationals allowed to stay and new arrivals.

Furious Labour MPs demanded the Home Secretary come to the Commons to “clarify” the Government’s position.

And they accused Ms Nokes of “misleading the House”.

Labour’s Shadow Immigration Minister Afzal Khan wrote to her to say it was “clear that you provided misleading evidence”.

And he accused Ms Nokes of lacking “even the most basic level of understanding and knowledge of your own immigration policy”.

The PM’s official spokesman yesterday said planning for a no deal was “ongoing”.
He added: “We will be able to set out a position in due course.”
