A MUM claims she had a stroke after having her hair washed six times during a £200 salon appointment.

Nurse Adele Burns, 47, says medics linked the life-threatening event with having her head repeatedly pulled back onto the hard basin.

Speaking to the Daily Record, Adele said she had gone to the Rainbow Room International in Glasgow, but she had to have her hair washed six times because staff kept getting the colour wrong.

The mum, from Mid Calder, West Lothian, is now launching a £1million lawsuit against the salon.

She said: "My life has been turned upside down from what was meant to be a rare day out.

"With backing from my doctors, there is no doubt in my mind the salon caused the stroke."

Adele had gone to the salon in April 2016 for the cut-and-colour, leaving the five-hour appointment with a headache.

But the next day, the mum was found by husband Campbell, unable to speak or move.

Doctors at St John's Hospital in Livingston confirmed Adele had suffered a stroke after the dissection of the vertebral artery – a clot caused by trauma in the neck which stops blood getting to the brain.

Even two years on, Adele still struggles to speak, read and write.

She said: "This hasn't just left me isolated from society - I've been isolated from my own body."

Court documents now allege that the salon did not ask Adele to attend a "strand test" that would have avoided the need for her hair to be re-washed and re-coloured six times.

They also claim the salon was negligent in not offering her a front-facing sink or to provide neck protection.

Adele has no family history of strokes.

Jennifer Watson, from Digby Brown Solicitors, said: “A civil action against Rainbow Rooms is underway after our client’s life was undeniably altered following her appointment with their salon.

"Thousands of people will seek beauty treatment like this every year and Adele is incredibly brave in speaking out as a way of alerting others to the risks.

"Strokes caused by hair washes are not unheard of. There have been a handful of similar cases across the globe but I’m not aware of anything similar having called in Scottish courts."

Rainbow Room International has been contacted for comment.
